List Of The Doctors In Doctor Who

So, there I was, standing in line at the local comic-con, when this bloke in front of me turns around and asks, "Who's your favourite Doctor?" I mean, talk about a loaded question, right? It's like asking someone to pick their favourite child. But then again, I thought, isn't that what we're all here for? To celebrate the mad man in a box and his ever-changing faces?

And speaking of faces, that's what this little chat is all about. We're going to take a whirlwind tour through the TARDIS of time, or rather, the Whoniverse, and meet the gang of Time Lords who've donned the title of 'The Doctor'.

Before We Begin...

Now, I know what you're thinking, "But what about the Doctors we haven't met yet?" Well, as much as I'd love to spoil the future for you, even I don't know who's next in line. So, let's stick to the ones we've actually seen, shall we?

William Hartnell: The Original

Kicking off our list is the granddaddy of them all, William Hartnell. He might have been a bit grumpy, but who could blame him? He was the first one to step into the role of the Doctor, back in 1963. That's right, folks, he's older than your grandparents' vinyl collection.

Hartnell's Doctor was a bit of a mystery, even to the other characters. He was crotchety, but he had a soft spot for his companions. And let's not forget, he was the one who started the whole "reverse the polarity" thing. Whatever that means.

Patrick Troughton: The Cosmic Hobo

Next up, we have Patrick Troughton, who took over the role in 1966. His Doctor was a bit more playful, a bit more... well, cosmic. He was always getting into trouble, but he had a way of talking himself out of it. Or, you know, running away really fast.

Troughton's Doctor was also the first to regenerate on screen, which is a big deal in the Whoniverse. It's like the first time you saw someone change their profile picture on Facebook. Revolutionary stuff.

Jon Pertwee: The Dandy

Now, let's talk about Jon Pertwee. He took over in 1970 and brought with him a touch of class. His Doctor was a bit of a dandy, always dressed in his best, even when he was fighting off alien invasions.

Pertwee's Doctor was also the first to drive a car, or rather, a Bessie, a bright yellow roadster. Because why not? It's not like he had a spaceship to drive around in.

Tom Baker: The Scarf Master

Then came Tom Baker, the man with the scarf that was longer than the TARDIS itself. He took over in 1974 and became the longest-serving Doctor, a title he still holds today. His Doctor was a bit of a clown, but he was also incredibly smart and incredibly kind.

Baker's Doctor was also the first to say "reverse the polarity", which I still don't understand, but it sounds cool, right?

Peter Davison: The Boyish One

After Baker came Peter Davison, who took over in 1981. His Doctor was a bit younger, a bit more boyish. He was also the first Doctor to wear glasses, which I think is a bit of a missed opportunity for a cool gadget.

Davison's Doctor was also the first to regenerate on screen without his face being shown. I mean, can you imagine the ratings drop if they showed that on prime time TV?

Colin Baker: The Shouty One

Next up, we have Colin Baker, who took over in 1984. His Doctor was... well, he was a bit shouty. He was also the first Doctor to wear a coat with more colours than a bag of Skittles.

Baker's Doctor was also the first to regenerate off screen. I guess they figured if they didn't show it, we wouldn't notice. Spoiler alert: we did.

Sylvester McCoy: The Mysterious One

Then came Sylvester McCoy, who took over in 1987. His Doctor was a bit of a mystery, even to himself. He was also the first Doctor to wear a question mark umbrella, which is either incredibly cool or incredibly silly. I'll let you decide.

McCoy's Doctor was also the last of the classic series. After him, the show went on a little hiatus, and when it came back, things were a bit different.

Paul McGann: The Movie Doctor

When the show returned, it was with a TV movie in 1996, starring Paul McGann. His Doctor was a bit more romantic, a bit more... well, movie-like. He was also the first Doctor to have a proper theme song. I mean, it's not "I Am The Doctor", but it's still pretty cool.

McGann's Doctor was also the first to appear in audio dramas, which is where the show lived for a while. It's like the Whoniverse's equivalent of a podcast.

Christopher Eccleston: The Angry One

Then, in 2005, the show came back to TV with Christopher Eccleston. His Doctor was a bit angry, a bit... well, modern. He was also the first Doctor to wear a leather jacket, which I think is a bit of a missed opportunity for a cool gadget.

Eccleston's Doctor was also the first to have a catchphrase. No, not "Allons-y!", that's just French for "Let's go!". I'm talking about "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." Which, let's face it, is a bit of a downer.

David Tennant: The Tenth

After Eccleston came David Tennant, who took over in 2005. His Doctor was a bit... well, he was a bit everything. He was funny, he was dramatic, he was a bit of a rock star. He was also the first Doctor to have a catchphrase that wasn't an apology. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

Tennant's Doctor was also the first to have a proper farewell. I mean, sure, they all regenerate, but Tennant's was the first to be a big, emotional event. It was like the Whoniverse's equivalent of a royal wedding.

Matt Smith: The Eleventh

Then came Matt Smith, who took over in 2010. His Doctor was a bit... well, he was a bit weird. He was also the first Doctor to wear a bow tie, which is either incredibly cool or incredibly silly. I'll let you decide.

Smith's Doctor was also the first to have a proper introduction. I mean, sure, they all have introductions, but Smith's was the first to be a proper, "Hello, I'm the Doctor" moment. It's like the Whoniverse's equivalent of a first date.

Peter Capaldi: The Twelfth

After Smith came Peter Capaldi, who took over in 2013. His Doctor was a bit... well, he was a bit grumpy. He was also the first Doctor to wear a pair of Converse, which is either incredibly cool or incredibly silly. I'll let you decide.

Capaldi's Doctor was also the first to have a proper origin story. I mean, sure, they all have origin stories, but Capaldi's was the first to be a proper, "This is where I come from" moment. It's like the Whoniverse's equivalent of a family tree.

Jodie Whittaker: The Thirteenth

And finally, we come to Jodie Whittaker, who took over in 2017. Her Doctor is a bit... well, she's a bit different. She's also the first Doctor to wear a coat with more pockets than a bag of Skittles.

Whittaker's Doctor is also the first to have a proper team. I mean, sure, they all have companions, but Whittaker's are the first to be a proper, "We're all in this together" moment. It's like the Whoniverse's equivalent of a squad.

And there you have it, folks. A whirlwind tour through the TARDIS of time, meeting the gang of Time Lords who've donned the title of 'The Doctor'. It's been a wild ride, hasn't it? But then again, that's the Whoniverse for you. Always changing, always surprising, always... well, you know the rest.

So, who's your favourite Doctor? Let me know in the comments below. And remember, no matter who you pick, they're all brilliant. Because, after all, they're all the Doctor. And the Doctor is always brilliant.
