Meet Ed Gein, the Original Psycho

Now, let's set the stage. It's the 1950s, and Ed Gein is making headlines. This guy was a real-life horror show. He'd dig up graves, make lampshades out of skin, and create other... let's call them 'unique'... souvenirs from his victims. He was so twisted, even Psycho's Norman Bates was modeled after him!

But here's the thing, folks. Despite his chilling crimes, Ed Gein was actually quite... helpful. Stick with me, I'll explain.

Enter Ted Mundy, the Copycat

Now, fast forward to the 1970s. Ted Mundy is on the loose. This guy was a real charmer, always smiling, always helpful. But behind that smile, he was a monster. He'd strangle his victims, then dump their bodies. Sound familiar? That's because Mundy was inspired by none other than Ed Gein.

Mundy was so enamored with Gein that he even tried to mimic his crimes. But here's where things get interesting.

Gein's Unwitting Role in Mundy's Downfall

You see, Mundy was so obsessed with Gein that he started writing letters to him in prison. He'd brag about his own crimes, asking Gein for advice. Now, Gein was no saint, but he was no fan of Mundy either. So, he started writing back, but with a twist.

Gein started feeding Mundy false information, telling him to commit crimes in certain ways to throw off the cops. Mundy, eager to impress his idol, followed his advice. But little did he know, he was painting a big, red target on his back.

You see, the cops were monitoring Gein's mail. They saw Mundy's letters, realized what was happening, and bam! They had their man. Mundy was arrested, and Gein, in his own twisted way, had helped catch a killer.
