So, Why's He Called the Zodiac Killer?

Alright, gather 'round, folks. Let's dive into a tale that's equal parts chilling and intriguing. We're talking about the Zodiac Killer, a name that's become synonymous with one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in history. But why the moniker 'Zodiac'? Let's find out!

Letters, Letters, Letters

Our story begins in the late 1960s, when a series of brutal murders terrorized Northern California. The killer, as we now know, was meticulous - and had a flair for the dramatic. He started sending letters to the local press, taunting them with ciphers and cryptic messages.

One of these letters, sent to the San Francisco Chronicle in August 1969, was a game-changer. It was accompanied by a piece of a bloodstained shirt, allegedly belonging to one of his victims. The letter itself was a riddle, a cipher that challenged the recipient to decode it. And boy, did he ever!

Revealing the Zodiac

That letter, when decoded, revealed a haunting message: "I like killing people because it is so much fun." But that's not all. The killer also signed off with a symbol, a circle with a cross beneath it. This symbol, he claimed, represented a 'Z', and thus, the 'Zodiac' was born.

Now, you might be wondering, why 'Zodiac'? Well, our killer was a bit of a showman. He claimed to be collecting 'slaves' for his afterlife 'Zodiac' cult, and even went so far as to create a 'Zodiac' symbol for each of the signs of the zodiac. Talk about a twisted take on astrology!

More Than Just a Name

The name 'Zodiac Killer' might seem like a chilling moniker, but it's also a testament to the killer's cunning and manipulative nature. By choosing this name, he inserted himself into the public consciousness, becoming a part of the cultural lexicon. He's a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there's always a story to tell, a mystery to unravel.
