Who Was The Shortest QB In NFL History?

You've seen them tall, you've seen them fast, and you've probably cheered your lungs out on Sundays. But have you ever wondered just how short a quarterback can actually be and still dominate the NFL? Spoiler alert: the answer might surprise you — and put a smile on your face.

The shortest quarterback to make it big in the NFL is none other than the legendary Doug Flutie, standing at a towering height of just 5'10". That's right — taller than plenty of us, but a giant among giants? Not even close. And yet Flutie carved out an incredible career that millions of fans will never forget.

Doug Flutie was drafted in 1985 by the Los Angeles Rams and went on to play for multiple NFL teams over a career spanning more than a decade. He also had stints in the Canadian Football League, where he became a total superstar. Not bad for a guy who didn't check the usual "quarterback towering height" box, right?

Why Does Height Matter So Much For QBs?

You might think NFL coaches judge quarterbacks by height first and arm strength second. And honestly? Sometimes they do. The desire to see over the offensive line is a big deal, and taller QBs have that cool vantage point.

But here's the funny part — scouts who fixate on height have occasionally missed out on some seriously talented players. It's almost like judging a book by its cover, except the book can go out and throw a 60-yard touchdown. Makes you think, doesn't it?

Flutie proved that vision, creativity, and pure heart can beat a tape measure any day. He had a rocket arm, lightning-quick reflexes, and a playmaking style that left fans buzzing. Height? Overrated.

Other Short QBs Who Proved The Point

Flutie isn't the only short QB who left fans jaw-dropped. Take Russell Wilson, listed at 5'11", who won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks and became a franchise legend. And don't forget Kyler Murray, also 5'11", who was the first overall pick in the 2019 draft.

These guys didn't let a little thing like height stand between them and football greatness. If anything, their shorter stature gave them a unique edge — better disguise passing lanes and a knack for sliding through pressure. Pretty clever, right?

Even NFL hosts like Kyler Murray have openly joked about hearing the "you're too short" comments for years. And every time, they responded by letting their on-field performance do the bragging. Talk about letting your actions speak louder than numbers.

The shortest QBs in NFL history remind us that limitations are just别人's opinions — and opinions don't play the game. What matters is your preparation, your passion, and your willingness to show up every single time. That's a lesson anyone can carry off the field.
