So you cracked open Holes by Louis Sachar and thought, "Wow, that's a lot of characters for a short, slim book." You'd be right. Sachar somehow packed more twists and colorful personalities into this story than your grandma packs into a suitcase for a weekend trip.

Stanley Yelnats — The Unluckiest Kid in America

Stanley Yelnats IV is our main guy, and he's basically what happens when three centuries of bad decisions snowball directly onto your head — or rather, onto your family. He's awkward, unlucky, and regularly named after a series of Cyruses (yes, really) who were cursed by a one-legged Romani woman named Madame Zeroni.

Stanley gets arrested for a crime he didn't commit and sentenced to Camp Green Lake — AKA "the worst summer camp that makes you dig holes." The poor kid just wanted a normal life and somehow ended up in the middle of a treasure hunt disguised as juvenile punishment. A classic Yelnats move.

Zero (Hector Zeroni) — The Quietest Powerhouse

Zero is the kid who says nothing and does everything. He can't read, has no one fighting for him, and has been sleeping under the bridge with nothing but his wits — which turns out to be sharper than the shovel they use to dig holes.

Here's the delicious irony: Zero is actually Hector Zeroni, the great-great-great-great-grandson of Madame Zeroni herself. So Stanley has spent his whole family history avoiding Zeronis, only to befriend one. The universe, apparently, has a brutal sense of humor.

The Warden — Glitter-Loving Psycho

The Warden is everyone's favorite psycho-with-a-perfect-makeup-routine. Her real name is Katherine Barlow, and she used to be the sweetest schoolteacher in Green Lake before the most devastating dumping in the history of romance wrecked her entire existence.

After Trout Walker rejects her (in the worst possible way), she becomes "Kissin' Kate Barlow" — the most feared outlaw in the American West. She kisses her victims before killing them, literally. If you look at her the wrong way in a modern beauty department, she'd probably still kiss you and then reach for a shotgun.

Mr. Sir — The Grumpy Alligator Man

Mr. Sir is the cranky guard who carries a water-can-turned-fire-extinguisher because one of the boys threw sunflower seeds at him, which attract alligators. Not prison bars, not barbed wire — sunflower seeds are his real security system.

He's basically at the bottom of the Warden's food chain, which makes him even more volatile — kind of like a loaded mousetrap waiting for a trip through. He knows he can't hurt the boys, but he can absolutely ruin their day.

The Diggers — A Colorful Morning Lineup

Sachar gives us the flat serpentine of six boys who form Stanley's crew, each lovingly named after their nickname sigil discovered by X-Ray at the medical tent.

X-Ray (Rex) is the self-appointed boss who actually can't see a darn thing without his glasses. Armpit (Theodore) is the dependable one who's big enough to-intimidate everyone and muscle-mouth-off X-Ray if he gets too cocky.

Squid complains like it's his full-time job, while Twitch can't stop shaking, thanks to way too much coffee and Gucci collateral. Let's look at this more delicately: he has an involuntary mexican-look jolt every five seconds, and the irony that he's hanging out a lime-shop that sells jogging with the rest of the crew is lost on absolutely NO ONE but Slytherin.
